Tethering a laptop to a WM6.1 device

Using your WM6.1 device's data connection to surf the internet from your laptop is easier than ever.

Tap Start > Programs > Internet Sharing icon

You'll see two options:

  • PC Connection:  Tapping the down arrow to the right of this option you can select USB or Bluetooth PAN
  • Network Connection:  Tapping the down arrow to the right of this option to choose the specific data connection that is available for use through your cellular provider.

Attach your USB cable to your computer and windows mobile device, then select the Connect option on the lower left hand side of the screen.  Your laptop will acknowledge the connection with a series of "Found New Hardware" messages.  You can now surf the internet from your laptop through your cellular data connection.

Tapping the Disconnect option on the lower left hand side of the same screen (the Connect option changes to Disconnect when the connection is made) disconnects the data connection.

Sometimes a Modification to the Registry is Needed

For some locked devices, such as the AT&T Fuze, you may not find the Network Connection option on the Internet Sharing screen (shown above).  Enabling this option is a simple registry modification:

  • Install a registry editor, such as PHM Registry Editor, to your windows mobile device
  • Open up the Registry Editor and navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Comm > InternetSharing > Settings
  • Delete the ForceCellConnection Key
    • Press and hold your stylus on the ForceCellConnection key until a popup menu appears
    • Select Delete (there won't be anything in the Settings key just like the screenshot on the left)
  • Exit the Registry Editor and soft reset the device

Of course you need to be sure you subscribe to an appropriate data plan through your cellular provider or else you could be surprised with a pretty big cellular bill.

    I deleted the registry entry and after a soft reset it appears again. Is there any program you can recommend to set permissions to this key? I also tried editing this key to match the target connection and after resetting, it changes back to PhoneAsModem

        HTC Touch Diamond. I found a program called Diamond Tweak that was effectively able to disable PhoneasModem. I've also now been using a program called USBModem, which works great tethered or over Bluetooth.
