Searching on a Windows Mobile Device

Have you discovered the Search feature of Windows Mobile?  The search function searches for strings of alpha- numeric data across applications.  For instance I often forget when I had my last haircut.  When my hair starts bugging me, I'll look back in my calendar to see how long it's been.  This is easy to do:

  • Tap Start > Programs > Search
  • Input the search string into the "Search for" line
  • Tap the down arrow to the right of the "Type" line and select Calendar
  • Tap Search

Search1 Search2

Unless you specify otherwise, the search function searches across the Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Notes, Outlook (email), Excel and Word applications.

I ran a few tests and found that the search function

  • Searches the file names only for Excel and Word files.  Search does not search data inside Excel and Word files.
  • Searches the to and subject fields as well as the bodies of all messaging accounts
  • Searches across all Outlook applications (calendar, contacts, tasks, messaging, and notes) when Outlook Mobile is selected

The Advanced option only seems to be active when Word Mobile is selected:
