FAQs: Do I need to be concerned about Viruses or Spyware on my Pocket PC?

I am not concerned about viruses or spyware invading my Pocket PC and I don't think you need to be overly concerned about them either for a couple of reasons:

  • Pocket PCs run a distinctly different operating system than a Windows computer so the viruses and spyware that affect computers do not affect Pocket PCs
  • The Pocket PC population is really quite small.  The people that write viruses seem to look for the biggest bang for the smallest buck, so many of these folks probably aren't interested in the small Pocket PC population and would most likely apply their talents elsewhere.
  • There have been no confirmed instances of a destructive virus infecting a Pocket PC.

duts-a The only confirmed Pocket PC virus I have read about was a "proof of concept" virus that was created in July 2004.  This virus was created specifically for the Pocket PC, and posed no real threat to Pocket PCs.  The author only created it to see if it is possible.  The virus was actually very polite and asked for permission to spread.

From time to time, I read articles or alerts about Pocket PC viruses, but as far as I can tell these articles and alerts have been authored by antivirus software developers, probably to generate some interest in their software.  Todate, there really have not been any confirmed reports of a Pocket PC virus.

Of course, if you feel so inclined, there is Pocket PC antivirus software you can purchase and install on your mobile device.  I can't vouch for any of this software since I've never tried any of it.

Since the nature of antivirus software is to run continuously in the background, using the software will likely degrade the Pocket PC's performance.  The use of such software for a perceived threat that has yet to materialize seems like overkill to me.
