Backing up and deleting PIM data (WM5.0)
All of the contact, appointment, task, category and other PIM data on a WM5.0 Pocket PC is stored in a database, called pim.vol, which can be found in the Pocket PC's root directory. You can back up this data by copying the pim.vol file to a storage card or to your computer. Then if you perform a factory reset of your Pocket PC, you can restore the data to the Pocket PC by simply copying the pim.vol file from your computer back to the root directory of the Pocket PC.
To delete all of your PIM data at one time, all you need to do is rename the pim.vol file to something like pimold.vol (this file can be deleted later, if you so choose). Then when you perform a soft reset, the Pocket PC will recreate an empty pim.vol file. If you want to delete only one type of PIM data, such as contacts, you can use an application like SKTOOLs. SKTOOLs includes a "delete PIM information" option that can be used to delete an entire category of PIM data (contacts, appointments, tasks, etc.)
Some third-party applications also store user data in .vol files. For instance, Agenda Fusion stores project information in FusionProjects.vol (found in the root folder), and SmaatoCost stores specific profile information in the smaatoprofiles.vol (found in the same folder as the SmaatoCost.exe file). This data can be "backed up" by copying the related .vol files to a storage card or to a computer.
