A Car Charger, Cradle and 4GB mini-SD card for my hw6925
I've already written a couple of articles about some of my experiences with my hw6925, and in those articles I've highlighted some of the accessories I'm using:
A Car Charger & Cradle
I finally bit the bullet and bought the ProClip car charger and cradle for my hw6925. It wasn't cheap, but I've got to say, I really love it! The ProClip cradle comes in two parts:
- The first part is fitted specially for your Pocket PC: To help you make the right choice, ProClip's website includes a Device Holder page where you can select the specific brand and model of your Pocket PC. After you've specified your exact brand and model, you'll be taken to a page where you can select from a comprehensive array of holders. Some of the holders tilt and swivel, some are powered either by plugging into a cigarette lighter or by hard wiring into your car's electrical system, some include an independent speaker & microphone, and some include an external antenna. I chose the holder with tilt swivel that is powered by the car's cigarette lighter.
- The second part is fitted specially for your car: You will select ProClip's vehicle mount that matches to your car's make, model and year. No suction cups here to place on your windshield (I've never felt very secure using suction cups). Instead the mount is custom made and designed to clip securely into the seams between the panel sections of your dashboard. I chose the Center mount for the Volkswagen Cabrio.
ProClip includes some great instructions on how to assemble the holder and the vehicle mount, but the instructions really aren't necessary. All you have to do is screw the holder to the mount (the screws are included). The trickiest part was clipping the holder into the seams of my dashboard. As it turned out, there had been a mid-year model change for my Volkswagon Cabrio and so the vehicle mount I ordered was not the right size. I called ProClip up and they promptly sent me the correct part and a postage paid return envelope for the part that didn't fit. I found the ProClip support person to be extremely knowledgeable about the products, and very cheerful, helpful and responsive.
I've tried out cheaper generic cradles and they don't even come close to the simple elegance of the ProClip cradle - I wish I had not wasted my money on these inferior cradles. The fit is just perfect and the cradle sits high up on my dashboard, so I get a clear GPS signal and a great view of the Pocket PC at all times.
Finally a 4GB mini-SD card that works!
When I bought my hw6925, I also bought two 2GB mini-SD cards by A-Data. The A-Data cards work great and I didn't think I really needed a larger SD card. But with the recent iGuidance 4.0 update, the navigation software I use, all the maps are now installed as one seamless map. iGuidance now requires almost 2GB of dedicated storage space! This hardly left room for anything else on my storage card, and I didn't want to have to be switching out SD cards every time I wanted to use my navigation software.
Luckily, someone told me about a 4GB mini SD card sold by Memory Suppliers that they thought might work. I ordered the card on a Friday and received it the very next Monday. The card was unformatted, so I formatted it in my computer and loaded it up with 3.9 GB of music, videos and other stuff. After a month of use, the card was still working great, so I cleaned up the card and installed my iGuidance 4.0 upgrade to it.
I have gotten confirmation from other users that this card is working well for them too. But I have also heard a few reports of users who ordered the 4 GB mini-SD card and received an SD card that was labeled as 4GB but was really only a 1GB SD card. I hope this is just a problem with a batch of cards that Memory Suppliers received from their source, but I will be monitoring the situation and report back at a later date. I note that Memory Suppliers provides an unconditional 30 day money back guarantee as well as a lifetime warranty on the cards they sell.
10/13/2007 Addendum regarding the 4GB mini SD card:
As mentioned above, I have heard from a few other users about issues they have had with this card. Because I have recommended the card here and on the different Pocket PC forums that I visit, I wrote Memory Suppliers about my concerns. I recently received the following email response back from Memory Suppliers:
Thank you for your concern regarding this matter. We do try to keep people aware that the 4GB MiniSD cards that we do sell are not a standard format. The SD specifications only allow SD cards to be at most 2GB in capacity. Since the advent of SDHC, memory cards can now be much larger, but do require new hardware for compatibility. However, just like Transcend has made the 4GB SD card (full size), we have made the 4GB miniSD card that varies from the SD standard to allow a 4GB capacity. Due to this variation, problems do arise where these cards will report the incorrect size, most of which will say 1GB.
There are a few solutions to this issue. You can use a partition utility in Linux to repartition the miniSD card into a 4GB sized card again. You can also format the card in to two 2GB partitions for best compatibility this way. You can also use a Windows tool called Swissknife (http://www.compuapps.com/download/Swissknife/swissknife.htm) to format the memory card back to 4GB in total capacity. Windows itself does not properly handle the formatting of flash memory and will not be able to recover a card that is partitioned improperly. This is widely unknown by our customers, and that is why we recommend the use of Swissknife.
Finally, there is a LIFETIME replacement warranty on all of these memory cards. If for some reason, that the memory card is showing 1GB, and you have or have not tried the above solutions, we will most definitely replace the memory card without hassle. Also, if you are within the first 30 days of purchase, you may also send the card in for a refund. Most of the people that you have referenced from the website listed in your email are attempting to break the terms of our warranties for their benefit, and are unhappy. As it has been said, it is impossible to please everyone.

Julie,
I am glad you like the ProClip. I have used it for some years for my phone and the 4700 with GPS. It is great and give options where to place the device in the car.
I just saw the new Ipaq 200...I MUST get it :o)
Kaj, I'm very excited about the new line of IPAQs that's getting ready to ship! The IPAQ 200 is creating quite a stir, isn't it? I might have to get me one too! Who ever said the stand alone Pocket PC was dead???
Hi Professor Julie:
I recall speaking with you on the hp site about my 5915. I now have filled my 2GB Sseparate SD card with music and am ready to try your 4 Gb tip. How did you format it on the PC?
I formatted the 4 GB card as FAT32 in my PC. You can use a USB card reader, if your computer does not have a storage card slot. The computer will recognize the card as a separate drive. You can go to My Computer, right click on the drive that has been assigned to the card and choose "Format."
