Exploring the hw6900 Phone Settings

The hw6900 Pocket PC series come with a Phone Settings application that can be used to view and change some of your cellular phone services.  You can access this application by tapping Start > Settings > Personal tab > Phone.Tab_Phone1

  •  Phone tab allows you to set
    • Ring Type:  Here, you choose how you wish to be notified of incoming calls.  Choices include Ring, Increasing ring, Ring once, Vibrate, Vibrate & Ring, Vibrate then ring, None
    • Ring tone:  Here, you establish the global ringtone you wish to use for incoming calls.  Tapping the down arrow to the right of the ringtone box will reveal all .wav, .mid, or .wma ringtones that are stored in the \Windows\Rings folder. 
    • Keypad:  Choices include Long tones, Short tones, Off
    • Security:  Here you assign a required PIN code that must be entered before the phone can be used.  Emergency calls can be made without entering the PIN code.

 

  • CallForwarding1Services tab.  By highlighting one of the services in the list and tapping the Get Settings button, you can modify some of the cellular service options (please note some of these services may not be available for all cellular providers)
    • Call Barring
      • Block incoming calls:  Options include All calls, when roaming, or Off
      • Block outgoing calls:  Options include All calls, International, International except to home country, or Off
    • Caller ID:  Here you can choose to reveal your phone number to "Everyone" or to "No-one"  
    •  Call Forwarding  allows you to specify how you wish to handle incoming calls: 
      • Forward all incoming phone calls
      • Forward phone calls only if:
        • VMTextNo answer:  input number (usually voicemail number) and Forward After:  choose from between 5 & 30 seconds (this option may not available for all cellular providers)
        • Unavailable: input number (usually voicemail number)
        • Busy:  input number (usually voicemail number)
    •  Call Waiting:  Options include "Notify me" and "Do not notify me"
    •  Voice Mail & Text Messages.  To use text messaging or voice mail services, input the appropriate phone numbers  in the appropriate space provided:  
      • Text messages service center
      • Voice Mail
    •  Fixed Dialing1Fixed Dialing allows you to restrict cell phone use to specific phone numbers or area codes.  To use this option:
      1. Place a checkmark in the box to the left of "Enable fixed dialing." 
      2. Then add numbers to the Number patterns box by tapping the Menu button on the lower right-hand side of the screen and inputting the area code or phone number in the space provided. 
      3. Continue adding numbers in this way until all numbers have been added. 
      4. Then tap Done twice, enter PIN2 and tap Done.

 

  • Tab_More1Network tab specifies the current network your phone is using and allows you to search for a new network by tapping the Find Network button 
  • GPRS tab shows the GPRS authentication method for data communications.  There are two options:  PAP & CHAP.
  • CSD tab includes two options: (Circuit Switched Data)
    • Data rate version
    • Connection type:  options include
  •  TTY:  Place a checkmark in the box to the left of "Enable TTY support" if you wish to use this option. 
  •  More: 
    • Automatic pickup specifies how you wish calls to be answered when you are using a wired headset
    • Broadcast Channels:  If the Enable checkbox is selected, you can tap the Settings button to input specific channel options.

Quick Tips & Tricks

  • Establish a PIN code to lock your phone to prevent anyone from using it to dial calls (Phone tab)
  • Ringtones can be in the .wav, .mid, or .wma format and must be placed in the \Windows\Rings folder (Phone tab)
  • To improve response time, set the keypad option to "OFF." (Phone tab)
  • To change the number of times the cellphone rings before it transfers to voicemail, change the Call Forwarding "No Answer - forward after" option.  Changing the "forward after" option to the maximum 30 seconds results in 4 rings. (Services tab > Call Forwarding option)
  • To enable Call Waiting on the Pocket PC, be sure to select the "Notify me" option on the Call Waiting setting (Services tab > Call Waiting option)
  • If you experience a poor cellular signal, use the "Find Network" button to search for a different network. (Network tab > tap "Find Network" button)
