Software you might need

I frequently see postings on the Pocket PC forums from users looking for software.  In this article, you will find links to some of this frequently requested software.

ActiveSync is what many of us use to keep our Pocket PCs in sync with Outlook on our XP computers.  If you have a Vista computer, you'll need to install Windows Mobile Device Center.

  • ActiveSync 3.8:  Microsoft pulled the links to the version of ActiveSync some time ago, but if you are running a Windows Mobile 2003 se Pocket PC (or earlier OS), you might want to use this version of ActiveSync.  It allows you to sync via WIFI connection (a feature that was eliminated when the WM5.0 OS was adopted), and allows you to sync your PIM data based on categories (so you can filter out records by category).  Unless you have a WM5.0 (or later) device, there is no reason to use any other version of ActiveSync.  Luckily, you can still download this version from HPC Factor's website.
  • ActiveSync 4.2 can be used to sync Windows Mobile 2003 (or earlier OS) Pocket PCs.  AS 4.x is required for any WM5.0 Pocket PC.  This is the version I use with my with my Windows Mobile 2003 and WM5.0 Pocket PCs.
  • ActiveSync 4.5 is required to sync with any XP computers that are running Office 2007.
  • Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 is required to sync to a Vista computer.

Some software you install on the Pocket PC may require Microsoft Embedded Visual Basic Runtime or .Net Compact Framework 2.0 before it will run.  Usually you will receive a message either during installation or when you attempt to open the application that this software is needed.

  • Microsoft Embedded Visual Basic Runtime:  Microsoft discontinued support of this software after Windows Mobile 2003se, so there is no version of Visual Basic Runtime specially for WM5.0. This software runs fine on a WM5.0 Pocket PC, but you must install it to main memory and not a storage card.  NOTE:  Microsoft has removed the software from their website, so I have uploaded a .CAB file to RapidShare.  Please let me know if the CAB file does not download properly.
  • .NET Compact Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2

Macromedia Flash Player 7 for Pocket PC may need to be installed on your Pocket PC to view flash content embedded in web pages with your mobile browser (Pocket Internet Explorer).
