Q&A: Why doesn't my Pocket PC notify me when I receive new email?

Many Pocket PCs do not support push email.  Instead email is pulled down whenever you retrieve new email to your Pocket PC.  However, you can set some options in your messaging accounts that will prompt the Pocket PC to automatically retrieve new email in regular intervals throughout the day; and you can also specify how you wish to be notified when new email is retrieved.

Automatically Retrieve Email
First you need to set an option on the Pocket PC to retrieve your messages automatically.  You also need to establish the specific time intervals the Pocket PC will use to automatically check for new messages.

  • Open up the Messaging application on your Pocket PC
  • For Windows Mobile 2003 devices, tap Accounts > Accounts; for WM5.0 devices tap Menu > Tools > Options
  • Select a messaging account > Next > Next > Next
  • On the E-Mail Setup (4/4) screen, tap the Options button
  • On the Options (1/3) screen, place a check in the box next to "Connect and check for messages every xx minutes".  Also establish the specific time intervals for the Pocket PC to use to check for new messages by entering the number of minutes in the space provided.
  • Tap Next > Finish

Establish notification settings
Next you need to specify the specific notification you wish to hear or see whenever new messages are retrieved to your Pocket PC:

  • Tap the Notifications tab, then tap the down arrow to the right of the Event dialogue box.
  • Select the "Messaging: New e-mail message" event
  • Select how you wish to be notified (play sound, display message on screen, flash light) and any related options as desired.

Finally, to receive notifications whenever email is retrieved, you'll need to start the messaging application and leave it running. You can "minimize" it by switching to another application (tap Start > Programs etc. etc.).

Take Caution when using this option
If you use this feature, your Pocket PC will now turn on in regular intervals to check for messages, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  If left to run automatically, this could potentially drain your battery, so be sure you perform regular backups of your Pocket PC.
