Q&A: Why can't I send email messages from my Pocket PC?
The measures some ISPs have taken to avoid the illicit use of their outgoing SMTP servers by spammers has made it very challenging at times to get outgoing email working on a Pocket PC. Here are some things to try if you are not able to send email from your Pocket PC.
Enable outgoing email authentication
At a minimum, most ISP authenticate outgoing email. Check your email settings to make sure you've enabled authentication of your outgoing email:
- Open up the Messaging application on your Pocket PC
- For Windows Mobile 2003 devices, tap Accounts > Accounts; for WM5.0 devices tap Menu > Tools > Options
- Tap the messaging account you just created > Next > Next > Next
- On the E-Mail Setup (4/4) screen, tap the Options button > Next
- On the Options (2/3) screen, make sure there is a checkmark in the box next to "Outgoing mail requires authentication"
- Tap Next > Finish
If you still have problems sending emails, you may need to enter your User name and Password in your Outgoing email settings. To do this, you'll return to the Options (2/3) screen, tap the Outgoing Settings button and enter your User name and Password in the E-mail Setup (3/5) screen.
Use a different SMTP Port Number
By default, the Pocket PC uses Port 10 as the Outgoing SMTP, but a few ISPs use a different SMTP port number. Check with your ISP to see if it uses a different port number for outgoing email. If so, you will need to append the port number your ISP uses to the Outgoing mail server information found in the E-mail Setup (5/5) screen as follows:
- Open up the Messaging application on your Pocket PC
- For Windows Mobile 2003 devices, tap Accounts > Accounts; for WM5.0 devices tap Menu > Tools > Options
- Tap the messaging account you just created > Next > Next > Next
- On the E-Mail Setup (4/4) screen, append the ISP number to the end of the "Outgoing mail" string as shown in this example: smtpauth.earthlink.net:25. I don't need to use this option, but as an example I have appended port number 25 to my Outgoing mail server by appending a colon and the port number to the end of the Outgoing mail string.
- Tap Finish
Use an alternate SMTP server
You may not be able to use your ISP's outgoing SMTP server at all. Instead try referencing an alternate SMTP server for "Outgoing mail" on the E-Mail Setup (4/4) screen, such as the one used by your cellular provider. Or you could search the internet and find an alternative SMTP server.
