Another Backup option!
In my previous article about backing up your pocket pc, I mentioned three applications that would work on a WM5.0 device. In the last few days, I've learned of another, newly released application called Mobile Backup for Windows Mobile (cost $19.99).
Today, I downloaded the trial version of it and installed it to my rx1950 (it took quite a while to download). During the installation, I noticed that it also installed Microsoft Net Compact Framework 2.0 to the Pocket PC, which, to me anyway, seems to be a resource hog.
The software allows you to:
- Select the specific data you wish to backup (Contacts, Appointments, Tasks, Email accounts/messages, SMS, My Documents, Ringtones, Programs, Favorites). The software also provides additional fillers including: All Office Documents, All Music Documents, All Image Documents, All Video Documents. (See Screenshot #1 below)
- Pick and choose the specific data you wish to backup, both in main memory and on installed storage cards (See Screenshot #1 & #2 below)
- Backup to main memory or to a storage card (however, the software does not appear to allow you to select a specific folder in main memory or the storage card where the backup files will be created)
- Schedule automatic backups (by data type, day, and time) (see Screenshot #3 & #4 below)

Probably the most intriguing thing about this software is its claim that it "is the first Backup solution for Windows Mobile, which enables you to transfer all your important data to any other Windows Mobile device you choose. It’s quite independent of whichever version of operating system you have now or intend to have later [emphasis added]." I will try this out and post back my experience.
You can learn more about Mobile Backup and download a 14 day trial version here. The trial version will not restore any of your PIM data.
