Notifications & Alerts
Has your Pocket PC ever sounded an alarm for no apparent reason? And then continued to sound the alarm even after you turned it off? Or have you ever set an alarm that never triggered? From time-to-time, the Pocket PC’s alarms and notifications get whacked out and if you call your Pocket PC’s support desk, you’ll probably be advised to perform a full reset of your pocket to set things right.
Alarms, notifications, and other internal time related processes are managed by the Pocket PC’s notification queue, so if your alarms and notifications stop working properly, the notification queue should be the first place you check. You may find some stray or erroneous notifications that are causing your problems.
I recently spent some time examining the notification queues on my hx2415 (runs Windows Mobile 2003 se), my rx1955 (runs WM5.0) and my hw6925 (runs WM5.0). Everything looked good on the hx2415, but the notification queues on the WM5.0 Pocket PCs were another story. The hw6925 had over 100 duplicate notifications and there were so many erroneous notifications in the rx1955's queue that alarms were no longer sounding. Here's a screen print of the rx1955's notification queue:
When I cleared all the notifications on the rx1955, the alarms started sounding again. Unfortunately, clearing ALL the notifications deleted some important internal notifications and I was unable to sync the rx1950. When I performed a clean reset, I got the legitimate notifications back. Here's a screen shot of the rx1955's notification queue after performing a clean reset (before syncing any of my Outlook data):
Even through I was not having any problems with the hw6925 (yet!), I manually deleted the 100+ erroneous notifications from the hw6925. Then with a clean queue, I ran a few tests - namely I performed a couple of soft resets, and then immediately reviewed the notification queue. Each soft reset added about 10 duplicate notifications to the queue.
This notification queue issue is an old issue dating back, probably, to the first Pocket PC. I think it is an issue with the Windows Mobile operating system and is not limited to any particular Pocket PC models. Nonetheless, it is an issue that can be easily resolved by systematically reviewing the notification queue and deleting erroneous notifications.
Avoid a full reset by cleaning up the notification queue
You will need to install some software that allows you to view and modify the notification queue. SKTOOLs includes a Notification Queue option and Memmaid also provides access to the notification queue (I have never used Memmaid, but hear that it is a fine software application). SKTOOLs is nice because it allows you to place checkmarks next to every duplicate or erroneous notification so they can be deleted all at once (after they’ve all been flagged), but every notification needs to be reviewed to find the duplicates. Here's a screenshot of SKTOOLs:
I prefer to use a free software by Scarey Bear called Check Notification simply because the software displays duplicate notifications in red so they are easy to find. But with Scarey Bear's software you have to manually delete each erroneous notification one at a time, which can be quite time consuming when you have over 100 duplicate notifications. The rx1955 screenprints shown above were taken of the Check Notififications software and you can see that the duplicate notifications are shown in red.
Scarey Bear also has an application, called Notification Clear fix, which is installed in the handheld's startup folder. Then whenever a soft reset is performed it prevents duplicate notifications from being created. I installed the Notification Clear fix software to the hw6925 and it does not seem to work. Both of the Scarey Bear applications were designed to run under an earlier version of Windows Mobile and a note on their website states that the software may not run on WM5.0 devices. You'll get another message stating the same thing when you install the software to a WM5.0 device, but I have installed the software to both of my WM5.0 handhelds and have had no problems running it or using it.
Here are links to the software:
SKTOOLS
MemMaid
Check Notifications by Scarey Bear
Tread Lightly when Deleting Notifications!
When you open the Check Notifications application, you’ll see an Options button. If you tap it and select Settings, you’ll be taken to a screen where you can select “Remove duplicate events”. Supposedly when you select this option, you can then return to the main Clear Notification screen and select the Clear button at the top right-hand side of the screen and this will remove the duplicate events for you. However, when I did this on my rx1955, it removed ALL the notifications in the queue, including ones that are needed for the pocket pc to function properly and to sync properly. I had to perform a clean reset to get those notifications back. Here’s a short description of some of the legitimate notifications you should see in the queue:
| Application | Notify Type | Event Type | Related to |
| Calupd.exe | CNT_TIME | ||
| CALNOT.EXE | CNT_TIME | ||
| Clocknot.exe | CNT_TIME | ||
| Calnot.exe | CNT_EVENT | RESTORE_END | |
| Calnot.exe | CNT_EVENT | TIME_CHANGE | |
| Clocknot.exe | TIME_CHANGE | ||
| Clocknot.exe | RESTORE_END | ||
| Repllog.exe | Unknown | ActiveSync | |
| Repllog.exe | RS232_DETECTED | ActiveSync | |
| CALENDAR.EXE | Calendar entry |
Take care when deleting notifications and don't delete any that are related to ActiveSync. However, if you accidentally delete an ActiveSync notification, you may be able to fix it without having to resort to a factory reset. If you have a recent version of SKTools, you'll find an option within the Notification Queue module that allows you to recreate the ActiveSync notifications:
Open up SKTools, and select the Notification Queue module. Then tap Action > Recreate ActiveSync.
If you can't find this option, then you are running an older version of SKTools and you'd need to upgrade to the most recent version.
It is always a good idea to backup your Pocket PC before you delete anything here. Then if you accidentally delete an important internal notification, you can perform a clean reset and restore from a backup and be back where you were in just a few seconds (versus a couple of hours having to set everything up again).

Hi
Nice article - I have a similar issue on my hp 6915 - I have managed to sort out the notifications thanks to this but I dont get a chance to snooze/stop the alarms any more anyone got any suggestions ?
By the way I tried the trial version of Memmaid and was more succesful than the paid for version of SKTool
Thanks

hmmmm. I haven't encountered that on my hw6925 (I use it as my daily alarm clock and, I snooze the alarm all the time). I'll have to chew on that for a while. So your notifications sound, but you can not turn them off?

Hi Julie,
yeah the alarm sounds but nothing appears on the screen, so you cant dismiss it turn it off or snooze. Getting sort of painful now. There are a couple of other stange things going on too if an caller that withholds their number phones I dont get a ring tone ! Think this is hard reset territory now.

I suppose you've already checked your Sounds & Notification feature to make sure they are set to show a message on the screen?
julie
Reply to this
Yeah i did check all of that - it made no difference at all. I started to have asynch problem as well - fortunatley SKtools allows you to back up the content to your storage card - so I backed up what content I could then gave it a hard reset everything is working again now. Out of interest both Sktools and Memmaid are both great products the demo of Sktools is limited to finding only 6 items but Memmaid is limited only by the number of days you use it. Sktools also allows automated backups to the SD card.

Even though it can be quite time consuming getting the pocket pc back where you want it, sometimes a full reset is what you have to do.
I've never used SKTOOLS' backup feature. Did you restore some of the files from the backup to your pocket pc after you reset it? If so, did it work pretty well?
I've never used Memmaid, but hear really good things about it.

Hi I backed it up to the storage card using Sktools then once I had hard reset the device restored them from the card. I did forget to back up my notes but thats no big deal. Well that is my first Hard Reset of the device since I bought it back in September last year so I cant complain really i guess !:o)

Hi , tried to download , 2 of the SKtools for my Hp rw6828 (sktool lite & Sktools), which gave me unknow alarm , ringing everyday at 8.30am . Both of which didnt work , can u recommand me a program that can solve my problems . Thanks alot

SKTools Lite wouldn't work since it is designed for smartphones and you have a pocket pc. Can you describe what happened when you tried to install SKTOOLS? Did you receive any kind of message? Did you also try to install the Scarey Bear software I recommended?

Hi Julie , after installing the SKTOOLS , everything works well , just that it dosent have the notification queue that its suppose to have . I'll try the Scarey Bear software later . but first , how do you back up your PPC ?? sorry i ask too many qns . THanks

Are you sure SKTOOLs does not have the notification queue option. Open up SKTOOLS, tap View > Maintenance. Then you should see:
Cookies
Installed Programs
Notification Queue
Storage Cards
To backup your pocket pc, you'd need to install some backup software. You could use SPB Backup or Sprite backup:

Julie,
This is an excellent article, thanks. I am in the same position with my new rx1955. I set the alarm and nothing happens. I purchased SKTools, looked at the Notifications, cleaned it up a bit and still nothing. Then I noticed that setting the alarm results in an entry "Windows\clock.exe" but dated exactly one week from today. (Today being Sat 4/28 and the entry being 5/5). Other entries, such as repllog are being set with the proper date. Have you seen this one before?
Reply to this
Bob,
After reading your comment, I set an alarm for today (Sat 4/28) on my rx1955, and when I look in the Notification Queue, it shows a "Windows\clock.exe" entry dated for today. I'm not sure why your experience is different.

Julie,
I'm facing similar issues to others noted in this thread with my ipaq 6945 running WM5.
My issues noted include:
1) Repeating overlapping alarms at various volumes after a soft reset. This can continue off and on for a minute or more.
1a) I also noted that if I had my ipaq in the "Meeting" profile prior to the soft reset the repeating/overlapping alarms a in "vibrate" mode instead of the audible alarm.
2) Notification boxes do not pop up -- this includes Alarms and event reminders.
2a) Since there is no notification box, I cannot dismiss or snooze the alarm.
2b) Notifications for event reminders, like Outlook appointments, seem to be "suppressed." By this I mean: I've noticed a couple times just as an notification is supposed to pop up that the box seems to "start" to pop up (a brief flash of a line along the bottom of the screen that immediately disappears again) but the box never actually appears and the notification never sounds.
3) Custom ring tones that are still set, and can be played properly while "editing" a contact, actually ring as one of the default ring tones/alarms.
I suspect that all of these behaviors are probably related, but I'm hesitant to go try software written for Windows CE that "should" work, but.... For every instance I find that something seemed to work I find someone else that said it didn't on their device. Or it fixed one of the behaviors I've experienced, but specifically mentions not fixing others (refer to Mark's 6915 above for one such example).
It seems the only real (TEMPORARY!) fix for all the issues I've listed is a hard reset and restore. A hard reset and reload every six months does not make an acceptable solution. Most other ideas (not qualified solutions!) seem to involve buying software to dink around in the registries or notifications queue. Again, this seems like a temporary solution. Please correct me if I'm miss-representing suggested workarounds.
It seems (from LOTS of evidence on sites like this) that many of these issues exist on MANY Windows mobile devices and versions, but I don't see any sign of an actual fix, or acknowledgment from Microsoft. Is there hope or evidence that they would fix this? Is there any way to actually contact Microsoft directly on this sort of issue?
I welcome any ideas, suggestions, and input you might have. Let me know if there is something else I can do, or someone else appropriate to contact!
Thanks for any help you can give!
Shawn

Shawn, did you load the software I recommended in this article? SKTOOLS runs very well on all my WM5.0 pocket pcs as well as my windows mobile 2003 pocket pcs. The Scarey Bear software also runs well on my 6925 and my rx1955 (both WM5.0 devices) even though the documentation states that the software was not designed for this operating system.
It would be great if Microsoft fixed this problem, but I am not confident that will happen. In the meantime, the fixes I recommend in this article work well and are a better method of handling errant notifications than having to perform a clean reset.

Thank you! Your the only resource I've found that explains what the heck happened to my ability to sync my WM5 PPC device after I cleared duplicate notifications. Clearly, I deleted the ActiveSync internal ones along with the calendar ones.
My question is this: is there any way for me to restore/re-enter the ActiveSync notification without a hard reset? Alternatively, is there any way you know of to load software (backup software in this case) directly onto a device that can't connect?
Thanks again! Great blog.
Reply to this
It sounds like you found a way to get your missing notifications back so you could sync. That's great news!
You can load your backup software to your pocket pc by copying the installation .CAB file to a storage card. Then you can insert the storage card in your Pocket PC and install the software from there. That's assuming you've got a .CAB file for the software. If you originally installed the software through ActiveSync, you can usually find the .CAB file for the software by looking in the \program files\Microsoft ActiveSync folder. You'll find a folder for the software, look in that folder and you should see a .cab file.
I keep .CAB files of most of my software copied to a storage card that is permanently installed in my pocket pcs, just for this purpose.
Glad to hear you are finding my blog helpful! julie

My problem came from recurring reoccuring calendar entries.
I fixed my reminders!! (no uninstall, no resets)
PROBLEM: windows Mobile 5.0 WM5 and probalby WM6? Notification Queue fails to sound alarm for CALENDAR.EXE events and or TASKS.EXE events. This problem is different than the more common problems which include: 1. duplicate notifications, Blanks notifications, etc. When you use memmaid or dell's Notification Management utility both show that everything is ok, meaning there are not duplicate or blank or excessive notificatins entries to delete yet your pocket pc or ppc is clearly not sounding the alamrs for calendar entries.
SOLUTION: Temporarily remove ALL calendar entries past, present and future from Outlook 2002 on your desktop and then syncronize with your ppc via activesync. Now without performing a soft reset I found that when I made a new calendar entry everything worked!! I then put all entries back into outlook from the recycle bin in desktop outlook sync'ed and have been fine for several days now. You can probably use outlook xp or outlook 2003, outlook 2007 and activesync 4.x, I used activesync 4.5 the latest at this time.
This fix will resolve a specific problem where either a single calendar event has something wrong with it and needs to be deleted OR the pocket pc's CALENDAR.EXE event is messed-up in which case it starts working again once ALL EVENTS past, present and future ARE REMOVED.
This procedure temporarily removes all calendar entries and see if that causes the ppc's calendar reminder to start wroking again. This is specific subset of problem which messes up the notification queue which comes into play when all the other problems that effect it such as duplicate entires, blank entries etc, are not occuring or have been fixed.
1.) backup outlook *.pst file
2.) spbplus bkup ppc
3.) remove all reoccuring appts or do that with the 2nd test in later steps.
4.) set activesyn to only sync calendar & tasks for previous 2 weeks.
5.) sink with another computer with a clean test outlook user profile.
6.) examine all calendar items which will be from 2wks past but include all future appsts.
7.) delete all calendar entries and in the trash examine them to see if any contain attendees or an email that got tossed into calendar by accident.
8.) unplug ppc and make a new calendar entry reminder 10 min in future and set reminder for either 5 min before or 0 min.
9.) chk notification queue with memmaid to see if there are any entries calendar.exe and if there are click it to see if it contains your entry.
10.) if the alarm goes off then recync and carfully reintroduce calendar appts back from trash to calendar - leaving off any that are suspect (ie causing the log jam in notification queue.).
11.) retest.
12.) if ok then resync with your normal computer. and continue to monitor event queue.

Hi Prof Julie,
My problem was that my Outlook Alarms no longer ring on my iPAQ 1950rx 1950. I installed and ran the SK software. Wow! My iPAQ sure is peppier, but the Outlook reminders still do not notify. My iPAQ alarms work, though. Is there anything else I need to do to get them back?

Have you verified the notification settings for your appointments? [Tap start > settings > personal tab > Sounds & Notifications > Notifications tab. Tap the down arrow to the right of the Event box and find and select Reminders. Then see what settings are in place.]

Yes, the notifications are set correctly. It had worked properly in the past.

I'd go back and review the notification queue again. If you can't find anything there, you may need to perform a clean reset to get the notifications working again. How often do you backup your Pocket PC? Do you have a backup file that was created BEFORE you started having notification problems? If so, you can restore from that backup file (don't restore from a file you created after you started have problems or else you'll restore the problem).
If you perform a clean reset, be sure to run a backup on the Pocket PC as soon as you've got everything set up again and working just the way you want it. Then save the backup file to your desktop computer some place safe. Then if you ever need to perform a nother clean reset, you can restore from that backup file and won't have to spend so much time setting your Pocket PC up again.

To perform a hard reset to an IPAQ 110 Classic and restore it to its factory settings:
Press Win + OK + Record buttons at the same time.
While pressing those three buttons, press the reset button found on the right side of the IPAQ 110 with your stylus and hold all these buttons for 3-4 seconds.
Then Release the reset button.
Wait until you see the words "Clean Reboot" on the screen and then release the Win + OK + Record buttons
Make sure you do things exactly in that order. It will be quite ackward pressing all those keys at the same time and you may need to ask someone to help you out.

You need to install syncing software and Outlook to your computer, then create a partnership between your computer and pocket pc, and then you can sync your Outlook data to your Pocket PC along with your Excel and Word files. If you have an XP computer, you'll need to install ActiveSync 4.2 or 4.5; if you have a Vista computer, you'll need to install Windows Mobile Device Center. You can find links for that software here:

Fixed my problem (reminders not alarming!) - found an HP forum message from Dr. Julie on Outlook Reminders not sounding where you referred folks to this site. I installed Scary Bear Check Notifications and deleted (held the cursor on the entry until the Delete prompt came up - that isn't clear and isn't stated anywhere) the Red Duplicates and any other notifications marked "Active" which appear to be notifications that are past due but never acknowledged/dismissed. As you thought, seems there were a lot of NULL entries and old reminders that were clogging the notification que. Note that I have an hx2495b running WM5.0 and it (appears to have anyway) worked fine. One thing that made me nervous was that the threads here talked about what to leave, but not really what to delete. Just deleting the Red Duplicates didn't fix the problem, but deleting the ACTIVE notifications also did. CALENDAR.EXE entries and NULL entries (again only Active ones) were my problem. May want to give some general guidance on what Should be deleted.
Reply to this
Glad to hear you were able to resolve your problem. You can safely delete most any of the notifications you find in the notification queue except for the ones that relate to ActiveSync. Deleting more than just the duplicate or erroneous ones may cause notifications to not sound for future appointments, but I have not found that to be the case.

Posted my success on HP Forum and got a response that instead of using Scary Bear's Check Notification they recommended:
"For WM5 devices it is better to use fdcSoft Task Manager
http://www.dotfred.net/TaskMgr.htm
it is much safer."
Looks pretty sleek - ever try it?
Reply to this
I have never used the fdc Soft TaskMgr software so I can't really vouch for it. But I don't know why Scarey Bear software would not be safe. I've been using it for more than a year and never had any problems with it. I actually prefer it to SKTOOLS's notification option becausree it is easier to see the notifications I need to delete since they are red.

Thanks for your info. I deleted all 20 or so erroneous CALENDAR.EXE events. This restored the notification messages.
Worked great! (I had many "Cannot execute ...EXE" messages after reboot before which may have caused the erroneous events.)

My reminder problem is a bit different than those found on this forum. After creating a new appointment with a reminder, there are NO calendar.exe entries in the notification queue. No wonder my reminders don't sound or flash.
The notifications start functioning after doing a hard reset, but they stop again after a day or two.
Any clues as to what prevents these notifications from being queued?
Thanks!

My iPAQ 111 Classic runs WM 6, and it still has reminder/repeating alarm problems. Your fixes are too much for me; I'll just live with it. I'ts shameful that Microsoft hasn't fixed it yet.
Reply to this
I don't know why these fixes are too much for you. They really are not so complicated. All you need to do is review your notification queue from time to time and delete the duplicate notifications. But I guess it is just easier for you to lose your notifications, perform a factory reset to get this working again, and then have to reinstall all your software all over again?
Reply to this
Been in IT for over 15 years. These fixes/patches are about the most hacked-up crap I've ever seen to get BASIC functionality working. While I'm glad you've discovered the core issue and fix, yours is but one of 15 different websites all touting fixes for the core problem that has hounded MS for several versions now.
Microsoft, if you're going to sell a product that syncs users with their calendar, then MAKE IT WORK.
The PERMANENT fix SHOULD be very simple. Look for duplicate/error processes and eliminate or prevent them. So far NO website has provided me a CLEAN fix. Using terms "hard reset" as a FIX action is like telling someone who has a virus to "format C:/" to fix the problem.
'Nuff said.

The software might have installed, but you may be missing the shortcut (all the items in the programs list are shortcuts, not the actual .exe file).
Use Pocket File Explorer and go out and search through the Program Files folder to see if you can find the application folder. If you installed the application to your storage card, you should find a Program Files folder there too.

I really want to do a hard reset for my iPAQ rx1950, but I am worried because I lost my original CD, ¿ Do you know if it is required after a hard reset ?
Reply to this
Don't worry, you won't need anything on the CD after you perform a clean reset. The only thing on the Getting Started CD is ActiveSync, perhaps Outlook 2002 (for your computer), some documentation for your rx1950, and probably some trial Pocket PC software. A clean reset will restore your rx1950 to its out-of-the-box factory settings.
