My new hw6925
|
I replaced my cell phone last month with an hw6925. I always said I didn’t think I would ever use a converged device, so now I am eating my words. I had some reservations. I’d read so many negative comments about the hw6515 that I didn’t think it was possible to have a great Pocket PC that was also a great phone, but I have been proven wrong. I guess the only negative thing I could say is, “It’s a little hard to get used to having a smaller square screen.” |

I’ve never used GPS before, so it’s been fun figuring that part of it out. I never thought I would ever need it or want it, but it sure is cool! I drove home from the market yesterday being prompted all the way by the lady in my Pocket PC. My thoughts so far about GPS are: It’s great fun….I’ll definitely need to set up any address I’m going to BEFORE I get on the road (don’t want to fiddle with it while I’m driving), and I definitely need to get an adapter for the car so I can keep the Pocket PC powered up.
Free Applications I’ve installed
I found a couple of free applications that I really like and thought I would share them here:
Smaato Cost allows me to key in the specific parameters of my cellular services, and the application tracks my voice and data usage for the month. It will also project my cost for the month, but I haven’t got all that set up. Since I subscribe to a limited data plan, I am relieved to know how many minutes and bytes I’ve used in the month, so I won’t be surprised at the end of the month when I get my bill.
MortRing allows me to assign ring tones to my contacts by category. With WM5.0, I can assign individual ring tones to individual contacts, but I prefer to assign a different ring tone for family members, a different ring tone for friends, and a different ring tone for work contacts. I only want to assign a unique ring tone to really important contacts, like my boss or my spouse. MortRing allows me to do this on the hw6925. MortRing is not a sophisticated application and the user interface is not great, but it works very well.

Congratulations!
Having been using an iPAQ 3970 + a "Wireless Pack" phone jacket for more than 4 years, I'm used to having "a great Pocket PC that (is) also a great phone". Only disadvantage: size and weight (due to the jacket). When thinking of a "modern" replacement I did want to avoid the square screen and I decided against a keyboard (what we call "a piano for mice" ).
So I bought an O2 "Xda neo" = "Qtek s100). Works great and has the old standard 240*320 resolution. It's really neat and very handy. But a most serious drawback: The display is 2.8" only and this is terribly small compared to the iPAQ's 3.8" screen. The fonts are far too small for my poor old eyes and I will need new glasses
I really wonder why there are no phone devices with the size of the good old iPAQs on the market anymore.

Yeah, my eyes don't see the small print so much either! I've heard good things about the 02 so I'm sure you have been happy with it. Even though I have the hw6925 , I don't plan to give up the hx2415. The screen is just so much nicer to look at when I have detailed stuff to do on the Pocket PC or if I want to watch a video.

I have to agree. I had a HP 6315, what a hunk of junk! It was always locking up and I was having to perform a soft reset, gave up on it after three months. The 6925 is a far superior device, I've had it for about four weeks now, it's great! I've never even had to do a soft reset. Works every time. Great bluetooth too, works with every headset I have, and I have four plus my car.

I've read a lot of complaints from users with the 6315 - a great idea, just poorly executed, I think. It's good to see that HP got it right with the 6925!
Thanks for stopping by! Julie

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm really loving mine too. Last weekend, I spent some time setting things up to make it easier to navigate while driving and it's gotten even better.

Good evening wondering you wrote about Mortring. How do you use it??? Like adding a ringtone to a contact etc. I appricated all the help

If you've got a WM5.0 pocket pc, you don't need to use MortRing to assign a ringtone to a specific contact --- you can do that within your Contacts application:
Open up Contacts > find the contact you wish to assign a ringtone to and select Menu > Edit. Scroll down until you see Ring tone (it is just under Work Address, IM, E-mail)
You can use MortRing to assign a ringtone to a category of contacts (you can also assign ringtones to specific contacts).
After you've installed MortRing to your Pocket PC, you can open it up by tapping Start > Porgrams > Mort Ring.
When you return to the Start page, you'll see a small icon that looks like a cell phone in the task bar. Tap the icon, and you'll see a menu:
Categories
Contacts
Refresh contacts
Recent SMS
Recent number
Exit
Assuming you have categories set up and assigned to all your contacts, you can choose categories, select a category (i.e., family). If you scroll down the page, you'll see the following:
Ringtone: a box, three periods and an X
SMS sound: a box, three periods and an X
The box will display the ringtone you've selected for the category, the three dots allows you to find and select a ringtone you've installed to the pocket pc, and the X removes the ringtone selection.
When you tap the three dots, you'll see every file that is installed on the pocket pc. It is quite tedious to sort through them all to find the ringtones, but if you already know the name of the ringtone, it won't be too difficult to find, but I renamed all my ringtones with a leading @ and so that makes it much easier to find them all. Once you've found the ringtone you wish to assign for that category (family), you can select the next category and assign a ringtone to that one and proceed in this manner until you are done. Then select OK at the top of the screen.

Thanks for your help.Asking questions gets great answers. Didnt know about contacts in wm5.0. Another question, in wm2003se windows media player let you use a selection for a ringtone by just tapping and holding on that music and it would let you send it to add to rings.
I having trouble find out how to do that with wm5.

It is all Great, One simple question.
I registered at the website for getting the MortRing file and I cannot get it yet. Any chance of helping with this will be appreciated.

Hmm. When I registered at the website, I got the info right away. Have you checked your spam catcher?
